We took a look at the best smartphone mounts on the market and found that not all are created equal. Vibrations can be a major problem for smartphone cameras.
Now, Apple has officially acknowledged the issue with a warning for motorcyclists using iPhones while driving.
“Exposing your iPhone to high-amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges, especially those generated by high-powered motorcycle engines, can degrade the performance of the camera system,” Apple said.
The main problem with handlebar-mounted smartphones is the effect of vibration on the tiny autofocus/stabilization systems that prevent blurry photos and videos. These components have no problem traveling in your pocket or car, where they are conveniently insulated. Motorcycles, especially those with a lot of power or vibration, are a different story. Prolonged rattling can degrade the performance of these systems and reduce image quality for photos and videos. A camera may not focus at all if the exposure is severe.
“High-horsepower or high-volume motorcycle engines generate intense high-amplitude vibrations, which are transmitted through the frame and handlebars. It is not recommended to connect your iPhone to motorcycles with high-power or high-volume motors due to the amplitude of the vibration in certain frequency ranges they generate,” according to Apple's warning.
What if your bike doesn't vibrate much? “Connecting your iPhone to vehicles with electric or small-displacement motors, such as mopeds and scooters, can lead to relatively lower amplitude vibrations, but if you do this a vibration mount is recommended to reduce the risk of damage to your iPhone. “
Some modern motorcycles with connected displays solve the smartphone problem perfectly by eliminating the need for a phone on the handlebars in the first place. Most motorcycles don't offer that luxury, however, so consider moving your phone to a tank bag with a clear top pocket if you're worried about your camera. Tank bags are much better at absorbing engine vibrations, but are a little less comfortable than a handlebar mount.
As a general rule, fancier phone cameras are more susceptible to damage from vibration, even when the camera is not in use. Time will tell if other phone makers recognize the issue on their devices.
