How to install motorcycle silencers

Motorcyclists are as varied as the people who ride them, and we, as motorcyclists, love to show our personalities by modifying our bikes. While there are some areas on a motorcycle that readily allow for customization, one of the simplest modifications that can be made is to the muffler. Sure, there may be other reasons to replace your muffler, such as upgrades, replacements, or weight savings, but whatever the reason, installing a muffler is relatively simple. However, before we dive into how to install the slip on the exhaust or muffler, let's look at some essentials.

Installing motorcycle exhaust upgrades requires researching state laws. Many states have regulations on modifications and it is best to be aware of these rules before purchasing and installing any upgrades, including mufflers. However, if you've already done your homework, then congratulations, grab your tools, get your bike up and let's get started.

Don't think you know better than the manufacturer

Sure, most mufflers follow the same process for removal and replacement, but that doesn't mean there won't be some unique requirements for the upgrade you purchased. Therefore, while this guide on how to install aftermarket exhaust is helpful, it should not be your only source of information. Your new muffler was designed by some pretty brilliant engineers, and your bike's factory manual or service manual was written by some pretty skilled technical writers, so trust their words on this more general guide.

Prepare the muffler for removal

Don't go to your old muffler all willy nilly and remove every bolt, mindlessly ripping the unit off. As with any modification, patience is key. To prepare the old exhaust system for removal, you will need to loosen the following:

Joint of

link The link joint may look different and even connect differently depending on the make and model of your bike. For example, a standard BMW F 800 muffler uses a spring mounting system while a different bike may use a gasket flange or band clamp.

Muffler bracket

As with connection joints, motorcycle exhaust brackets may vary. For the same F 800 the bracket is fixed with a torx bolt; yours may be different. However, the key is to support the weight of the muffler while loosening the bracket to avoid potential damage to the exhaust system, especially the header pipe.

Remove muffler, expose header pipe

The common term for motorcycle mufflers is “slip-on,” and that's because they typically behave that way, slipping and sliding off. However, this is not always true, especially for mufflers that have been attached to your bike for a long time. Some mufflers require a little force to remove, but keep in mind that too much force could be a bad thing for your exhaust system.

While a typical muffler removal and installation is a simple process, it can quickly become a nightmare if too much force is exerted during a removal where all accessories are not removed beforehand. Therefore, to avoid causing gasket problems or potentially damaging the cylinder head, double-check everything before giving a well-seated muffler a tug.

Slide the new muffler into place

Once the old one is removed, the priority with installing the new motorcycle muffler is to proceed slowly and carefully. Your exhaust system is fragile and the new muffler is precision engineered, meaning everything should fit perfectly. Installation is essentially the same as removal but in reverse. However, there may be some variations. For example, the mounting clamps may be slightly different. The point is to pay attention to every detail and proceed with caution as you approach the new muffler to the header pipe.

Connect the silencer to the motorcycle

Now that the silencer is in place, it needs to be mounted and secured. Securing or connecting the muffler can be done in many ways, but each way depends on the manufacturer of the muffler purchased. For example, some manufacturers will require additional O-rings or other accessories. Always remember to follow the instructions provided against the advice in this general guide.

Brackets The brackets of

mufflers are typically attached directly to the muffler and the motorcycle. These brackets can be molded directly into the new muffler body or separated from it, but either way the bracket attaches from the muffler body to the bike.

Terminals a

band I clamps a band, alternatively, act as a sleeve or holster around the body of the muffler. These clamps are attached to the bike and are tightened around the muffler to minimize vibrations and keep it stable.

Finger tighten everything, double checking alignment and positioning. Once everything is aligned correctly, you can reassemble the other elements – gasket clamps, flanges and springs – before attaching the muffler to the head tube. Don't overtighten. Read all instructions and do not exceed the torque.

Clean and check for leaks

Don't go for a ride yet! Running the engine before cleaning the new slip-on can cause permanent stains. Because you handled the muffler during installation, there is likely oil from your hands on the body, and this oil can stain the finish if not cleaned. Clean and clean the new muffler and be very careful when cleaning the end caps, especially if they are made of carbon fiber because even the smallest specs of dirt can ruin the finish and outer covering. After cleaning the muffler, check for leaks at the base and top of the headers, but don't burn yourself on the pipes.

Now that the legalities are out of the way and you know what you're doing, find the best mufflers and exhaust systems and make a small or large modification to your bike. Whatever you decide, make sure the mod reflects your style and personality.
