In what could be a big leap forward for electric two-wheelers, the company that sells more motorcycles in the world than anyone else has teamed up with the company that implemented a successful battery-swapping system in Taiwan.
The partnership between Indian manufacturer Hero Motocorp and battery-swapping network company Gogoro has great potential. Hero is the number one motorcycle seller, and India is a huge market. Hero will build motorcycles, and Gogoro will bring its swappable battery system to the partnership. As we've noted before , swappable batteries are a way to address the limited range of electric two-wheelers and work particularly well in urban areas, like Gogoro's Taiwan base, where many riders may not have an easy way to charge at home.
India's reliance on small motorcycles for transportation and its serious problem with air pollution in some cities means there is plenty of room for electric vehicle growth, assuming, of course, that the energy infrastructure to support it can grow together with it.

Hero sells motorcycles not only in India but also in more than 40 other countries across the world, opening up the possibility of extending electric motorcycles with swappable batteries across the globe. This partnership between two little-known companies in the United States is a partnership worth looking at from a global perspective.
